The Mariinsky Palace, built between 1839 and 1844, was originally conceived as a wedding gift from Emperor Nicholas I to his daughter, Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna. The palace became the home of Maria and her husband, Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg, and soon developed into a center of high society.
Later, the palace housed the State Council, and after the 1917 Revolution, it was occupied by various government institutions. During the Great Patriotic War, it served as the headquarters of the people’s militia and as a hospital.
