International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018–2028)

The United Nations declared the period from 2018 to 2028 the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development.” The initiative was approved in 2016 and aims to consolidate the efforts of the international community to address one of the key global challenges — ensuring the sustainable management of water resources.

The primary objective of the Decade is to raise awareness of the critical role of water in human life, public health, economic development, and the preservation of ecosystems. As part of this initiative, governments, international organizations, and local communities are joining forces to ensure universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation, particularly in the world’s most vulnerable regions.

Key areas of action:

reducing water pollution;
improving the efficiency of water use;
reducing water losses;
adapting water supply systems to climate change.

Water is an integral part of achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Decade represents an important step toward strengthening international cooperation and developing long-term solutions aimed at preserving this vital resource for future generations.
